The speakers work (and were in fact working prior to the upgrade to Windows 10 due to the aforementioned registry hack.) And yes, I've tried plugging and unplugging a jack in there enough times to count for some kind of fetish.

In fact, when my laptop POSTs, there's a little ASUS logo with an explosion sound effect that plays just fine over my speakers. The thing is, though, the jack detection switch is a physical component (broken) that has no physical connection to the speakers. Have you tried plugging and unplugging a speaker jack? It may fix the plug. So it's interpreted as external speakers. A short in the speakers plug, or an open (bad solder connection usually with those plugs) depending how the machine was made.
